If you are using a commercially made soap, you may not even be using soap at all! During World War Two, a shortage of raw materials made soap more expensive to produce and an alternative was found. Chemical and industrial advances made it possible to produce soap on a large scale. Soap making became one of the fastest growing industries of its day and became an everyday household item. Made from petroleum by-products, detergents were invented as a cheap alternative with an ability to scour any surface while rinsing clean. However, detergents strip all the natural oils away from hair and skin. Littering the shelves of supermarkets and beauty stores, they look allot like soap, but aren’t. Mostly they are detergents (petroleum products) and can be most easily identified by the label. If 'Sodium Lauryl Sulphate' is in the ingredients list, politely place it back on the shelf! It is a caustic  ingredient used for removing grease from car engines and is a major cause of eczema and many other skin conditions.

If you are looking for a true  soap for your children and yourself, it does exist.
